These rigorous education standards establish a set of shared goals and expectations for what our students should understand and be able to do in grades K-12 in order to be prepared for success in college and the workplace. Maryland’s College and Career-Ready Standards incorporate the Common Core State Standards and are built on high-quality academic expectations in English/Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics.

We also incorporate the Unique Learning System (ULS), and Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) into our various K-12 classrooms, as well as opportunities for Service Learning and Career Education.

Unique Learning System

Unique Learning System (ULS) is an online, interactive, standards-based curriculum specifically designed for students with special needs. Unique Learning System’s curriculum provides a way for special education instruction to include ALL students in the same activity, with different levels of expectation. ULS uses instructional targets to bridge between standards and curriculum content for students with special needs. Instructional Targets are aligned to State Educational and Transition Standards. The curriculum addresses critical skills in reading, writing, math, science and social studies with embedded transitional outcomes.

Expanded Core Curriculum

MSB also uses The Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) for blind and visually impaired students. The ECC is the set of skills that are utilized by students with visual impairments in addition to a core academic curriculum. The ECC provides a framework for assessing students, planning individual goals, and providing instruction.

Service-Learning

We are committed to ensuring that our students are vital and active members of the school, local and state community. In accordance with the state graduation requirements and in an effort to prepare our students academically, as well as, civically and socially, all students receiving a diploma at graduation must complete at least 75 hours of service-learning from a mix of curriculum-infused and independent projects.

Career Education

As early as age five, career education is implemented into student programs. Throughout their time at MSB, students are given the opportunity to experience career awareness, career exploration, career preparation and transition activities.
