The Therapeutic Recreation Department is committed to meeting the leisure activity needs of the visually impaired population served by The Maryland School for the Blind (MSB). We fulfill this commitment by arranging or providing experiences that are therapeutic, educational, and enjoyable. The department emphasizes physical and social community integration, promote student exploration and interaction with the environment, foster independence in persons with visual impairments, and serve as a resource to MSB staff and students, parents, professionals, community agencies, and organizations throughout Maryland.

Therapeutic recreation provides recreational and social opportunities for students on campus, as well as in the community for the opportunity to interact with non-disabled peers. Students may also travel off-campus to participate in community interactions, which is an invaluable experience.

Students participate in the following activities:

-Art

-Drama
-Games

-Sports

-Swimming
-Field trips

-Play skills

-Performing Arts

-Leisure activities
-Outdoor activities

-Clubs and Groups

-Community events

-Gym and aquatic activities

Based on the needs of the student, these programs are provided through one-on-one activities, small and large groups, organized clubs, community outings, and special events. Therapeutic recreation services are available to both day and residential students.
