Psychological Services
The Psychology Department at The Maryland School for the Blind (MSB) is dedicated to helping our students succeed academically, socially and emotionally. The department is staffed by psychologists and behavioral specialists who are committed to excellence. We serve students with visual impairments who may also be faced with mental health or additional challenges (i.e., autism, deafness, cognitive limitations, etc.). Our mission is to enhance the educational experience and opportunities for students. The Psychology Department is a part of an interdisciplinary team that examines how to facilitate learning and promote the overall potential of our students.
Collaborating with school and residential personnel and students’ families, our overall responsibilities include:
-Assessment and treatment of mental health and additional challenges of mental health.
-Psychological counseling.
-Resolution of problems that interfere with academic progress.
-Prevention and management of emotional and behavioral crises.
-Design and implementation of behavioral management programs.
-Help staff and families understand individual students’ development and how it impacts learning and behavior.
-Consultation services to staff and families.
Helen Keller once noted, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope or confidence.” The Psychology Department of MSB leads with hope and in the confidence that our students will achieve all that they can.
