How to Become a Student
Come learn at MSB!

To become a student at The Maryland School for the Blind, a child must be referred by his/her Local School System (LSS). Maryland residents do not pay tuition to attend MSB.

Admission Criteria

The Maryland School for the Blind, as an educational agency, views as its fundamental responsibility the provision of long range sequential educational services for students who are visually impaired. To fulfill this responsibility, MSB, in accordance with its Charter and Bylaws, offers services to students from birth to age 21, who are visually impaired and often multiply disabled, and deafblind, and whose impairments preclude them from receiving an appropriate education in a local public school setting. Residential services are available to students age 5 and above.

Q: How much does it cost to send a child to MSB?

A: There is no tuition and no cost to the family of MSB students. In most cases, the counties pay some of the cost each semester and provide transportation.

Q: Can I transfer my child to your school?

A: Yes and no. Although all referrals come to us through the local school system, families may initiate this process by contacting their child's school. All children go through an admissions process at MSB which involves evaluation and a review by the Admissions Team.

Q: Do you have academic students at MSB?

A: Yes, although the majority of students who attend MSB are multiply disabled and are in programs that focus on life skills and functional skills.

Q: Do students stay on campus all year round and on weekends?

A: No. Many students live on campus; however, they go home on weekends and holidays.

Q: Can parents visit their children in the evenings?

A: Absolutely! In fact, this is encouraged so that parents can see what their children are capable of doing and learn strategies to help their child continue using these skills at home.
